Events That Changed History 2 (notes)

Events - That Changed History 2

What Happened From the moment Jesus died to the resurrection:

He ascended into the lower parts of the earth. WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES, AND HE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN. (Now this expression, He ascended, what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth?)

Jesus preached to the spirits in prison

I Peter 3:19 And in the Spirit He went and preached to the spirits in prison…

What Happened When Jesus Died:

  • He went first to the hell part of hades (The underworld), to show His victory over sin and death. Col. 2:15
  • In hell, Jesus preached to the spirits in prison who were in hell. I Peter 3:19
  • Then before leaving hell, Jesus took the keys of hell and of death from the devil. Rev. 1:18

In Luke 23:43

  • It doesn’t say how long those three events took, but certainly less than a day, because of Jesus’ promise to the dying thief - “Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.”
  • Some believe that while He was in paradise, Jesus also preached the gospel to the O.T. saints, those who were saved but had little knowledge of God’s complete plan of redemption since they died before Jesus came to earth. This is based on I Peter 4:5-6 and Matthew 27:52-53.

While In The Garden

  • Jesus spent the remainder of the three days and three nights in paradise and then He ascended up on high and led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men. Eph. 4:8
  • Christians believe that when Jesus led captivity captive, He took paradise or at least all the saints in paradise (from the heart of the earth), up to Heaven so that paradise is now an empty compartment.

What Else Jesus Did From The Cross To The Throne:

He disarmed the army of hell. Col. 2:15 Amplified Bible [God] disarmed the principalities and powers that were ranged against us and made a bold display and public example of them, in triumphing over them in Him and in it [the cross].

Sunday

Jesus rises from the dead. Matthew 28:1 The day after the Sabbath day was the first day of the week. At dawn on the first day, Mary Magdalene and another woman named Mary went to look at the tomb. 2 At that time there was a strong earthquake. An angel of the Lord came down from Heaven, went to the tomb, and rolled the stone away from the entrance. Then he sat on the stone.3 He was shining as bright as lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The soldiers guarding the tomb shook with fear because of the angel, and they became like dead men. 5 The angel said to the women, "Don't be afraid. I know that you are looking for Jesus, who has been crucified. 6 He is not here. He has risen from the dead as He said He would.
