Proverbs 11 - A Disciplined Life (notes)

Proverbs 11 - A Disciplined Life

Review

Proverbs 3

Blessings of wisdom:

  1. Don’t forget God’s teaching.
  2. Keep His commands in our hearts.
  3. This will prolong (walking in wisdom) your life many years and bring you prosperity.
  4. Don’t let go of love & faithfulness--keep them, write them on your heart.
  5. You will win favor and a good name in God’s sight and man’s.

Review (Continued)

  • Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.
  • In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.
  • Do not be wise in your own eyes (man’s wisdom); fear the Lord and shun evil.
  • Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones.

Review

  • Honor God with everything you own; give Him the first and the best, your barns will burst, your wine vats will brim over.
  • But don’t, dear friend, resent God’s discipline; don’t sulk under His loving correction. It’s the child He loves that God corrects; a father’s delight is behind all this.
God’s Ways are Higher than our ways and God’s thoughts are higher than our thoughts.
Isaiah 55:8-11
  • It takes discipline to walk in God’s higher way.
  • It is a daily walk.
Review
  • As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields see for the sower and bread for the eater.
  • So is My word that goes out from My mouth: it will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
Wisdom Is
  • When a person learns to listen to God’s voice and then obey and apply the Word of God.
  • Living a life of dedicated discipline. We live in such a way that gets God’s attention.Applying the revelation that God gives us as we walk in discipline.
  • When we see things as God does. (The spirit of wisdom and revelation, Eph. 1:17)
Discipline
  • Must be demonstrated through integrity in our business dealings. 11:1
  • In walking in humility. 11:2
  • Is shown in being upright and faithful. 11:3
  • Is seen when we have a right view of wealth. 11:4
  • Will appear in our righteous deeds.
  • Will make our way straight.
  • Lack of it is seen in the wicked when they are brought down.
  • To walking right will deliver us in trials.
  • Lack of it traps the unfaithful by evil desires.
Principles
  • When powerful but vile men die all that power is meaningless.
  • If we do what is right when trouble comes our way we will not be troubled, our trust is in the Lord.
  • By evil words people destroy each other while godly people will not get caught in their cross fire.
  • When Godly people prosper, the city is blessed.
What Discipline Teaches
  • It takes discipline to live the type of life God wants for us.
  • It takes discipline to live a life of integrity.
  • It takes discipline to live a life of excellence.
  • It takes discipline to say no to self indulgence.
  • It takes discipline to keep our tongue under control.
Application
When I live a disciplined life people will see God in me and give Him glory.
